Bed bugs clearly get their name from what they do- nourishing themselves on human beings as they sleep in their beds. They like living near their source of food and therefore the bed is the most common and well know place to humans that the bug live.
However many people will tend to ask themselves do bedbugs only live in my bed? Well the answer is a big NO! Hotels, schools, public transport means and even offices- almost all places where people gather are all places where bedbugs can be found.
Given their flat bodies, they are able to hide in crevices, furniture joints and cracks. Shoes, mattresses, picture frames, wallpaper, couches, armchairs, electrical switch plates and other areas basically near their food (human environment) and where they can’t be easily found are their homes. Places like bags, suitcases and car seats form their temporary shelters.
Bedbugs are nocturnal bugs though at times, especially where they are heavily infested, they can come out to feed during daytime. They take just up to ten minutes to do so and then go back into hiding for up to 10 days to digest the food and to reproduce.
They don’t necessarily live where there’s poor sanitation, cluttered areas however favor them since they are offered more and better hiding places. They are also not known to build nests or to be really confined in a specific place and most can be found alone. This makes them freelance and hard to get rid of. The most common places where they are found, apart from beds, are places like hotels, hostels and resorts have the highest risk. Churches, dressing rooms, dormitories, moving vans and laundry marts are also areas where there is a large turnover of different people and from different areas and are all great locations for bed bugs to live in.
