BEETLES - THE SPECIES
If you happen to come across a beetle infestation you should know that you are certainly not the only ones plagued by these insects that seem to rule Planet Earth without really showing off their dominance!
There are about 400,000 to 500,000 different species of beetles and among these, at least 25,000 different species of documented beetles are found in North America. Highly adaptable to various kinds of climatic conditions, beetles are found in abundance on land as well as fresh water and are both friends as well as foes to the environment as well as the human species.
Adult beetles have two sets of wings, with the first set of wings hardened to protect the body of the insect. The first set of wings therefore look more like a shell than wings. The hind wings are usually hidden under the front ones. The waterproof nature as well as strength of these front wings are extremely essential to the survival of the beetle and are usually useful to protect the insect, rather than help it fly. Therefore, very few beetle species are great fliers, but the ones that do – like ladybirds and fireflies – are surely some of the most beautiful and impressive in the insect kingdom.
Beetles are prolific breeders and their population can shoot up to great numbers when given a chance, and we guess this explains their high numbers that are prevalent all over the planet! At a time, a female beetle can lay between dozens to hundreds of eggs depending upon the species and their life span too is quite impressive when compared to most other insects, with most species living up to a year if the conditions are favorable.

TYPES OF BEETLES
Although half a million of beetle species roam the planet, the ones that truly prove to be household pests, are only a few. Although different species of beetles are found all over – there are around 25,000 in North America alone – most of them have a lifecycle and survival cycle that have minimal interference with the lives of humans.
However, there are still a few out there that cause a nuisance. The primary among these are the Sawtooth Grain Beetles, Powder Post Beetles, Pantry Beetles, Larder Beetles, Flour Beetles, Dried Fruit Beetles, Carpet Beetles, Blister Beetles, Common Furniture Beetles and Warehouse Beetles. Among these, the Carpet Beetles, Powder Post Beetles and the Warehouse Beetles prove to be the most common pests representing the beetle community.
Carpet beetles measure around 1.5 to 1.6 millimeters in size and are tiny, round insects, with most of them showing off various colors on their backs. The complete metamorphosis of this beetle can take up to three years and at the end of it all, the adult beetle survives only for a few days – anything between 13 to 44 days.
As goes the name, carpet beetles attack materials like carpets, furs, hair, silk and wool. They also feed on bones, dead insects, hides, horns and hair. These beetles are attracted to fibrous material and therefore, can be found on woollen and wall-to-wall carpets, tapestries and the attic where such material is stored.
POWDER POST BEETLE
Powder Post Beetles measure between 3-6 millimeters and are reddish brown to black in color. Around 11 species of these narrow and oval-shaped beetles are found across the United States and Canada, usually feeding on hard wooden surfaces.
Apart from feeding on wood, these beetles also lay their eggs in the cracks of items such as floors, antiques, crates or just about everything made of hardwood. Digging holes into wood, these beetles, if left unchallenged, have been known to weaken and even bring down the entire structures of wooden houses.
Warehouse beetles are oval in shape and measure between 3 to 5 millimeters. They are dark in color, usually dark brown to black, with brown or red bands on their body. The larvae of these beetle grow to be larger than the adult beetles themselves and can measure up to 6 millimeters.
The adult warehouse beetles mostly prefer pollens and nectar, as well as dead insects and carcasses of animals. However, it is the larvae that mostly do justice to their given name. Feeding on dried pet food, cookies, cereals, candy, seeds, milk powder, cornmeal and just about everything else you can find in warehouses or in storerooms and kitchens, the larvae of warehouse beetles have quite the varied diet.
In light of the destruction these tiny beetles are capable of causing, it is recommended that you hire the beetle control Toronto services of exterminators at the slightest hint of a beetle infection.

Moreover, the number of beetles that are visible to you may not necessarily represent the total number of beetles present on your property. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you take every sign of the presence of beetles as a threat to your property.
