They are different from butterflies in many ways and what sets them truly apart is that most moths are nocturnal in nature.
WE PROVIDE MOTH EXTERMINATION SOLUTIONS TO BOTH RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS in the greater toronto area
While moths mostly stick to their business and hardly cause humans any direct harm, it is their business that eventually does the damage! The diet and food habits of a moth are varied, and although there are more than 160,000 different species of these insects found all over the world, the ones that invade households and businesses pretty much display similar characteristics when it comes to feeding.
Of course, moths have a good side to them too, and the silk industry is a brilliant example of how moths help human beings. The larva of the Bombyx Mori moth, more commonly known as the silkworm, builds its cocoon with the beautiful silk that we all have come to adore, and in the US alone, this thriving business rakes in about 250 million USD a year! However, when it comes to individual homes and businesses, most moths surely prove themselves as unwanted pests.

wHY ARE MOTHS CONSIDERED PESTS?
It is true that moths do not attack humans nor animals, and mostly go about their lives without directly interacting with them – although there is a species of moth known as the Vampire Moth that have been known to feed on the blood of mammals, including humans who happen to venture into their territory in the wild. Thankfully, everyday homes and businesses do not have to bear the wrath of these moths, so we do not have to worry about them for now!
In spite of their timid nature, everyday moths do cause a considerable amount of damage. Apart from infestations that might hamper our daily routines, moths tend to feed on woolen material as well as other natural fabrics such as silks, felt, hair, fur or even feathers, thus ruining a perfectly good wardrobe. Apart from clothes like those warm sweaters, coats and jackets, moths have also been known to destroy carpets, blankets, curtains, comforters and even pillows and cushions.
When it comes to agricultural devastation too, moths are quite a nuisance. Some moth species are known to feed on fruits and vegetables, sometimes damaging entire crops of cotton, cabbage, mustard, tomatoes and corn. Apart from the adult moths that fly about causing destruction, their larvae too are capable of quite a lot of damage.
Since they are nocturnal, moths often go unnoticed and before owners know it, they have a full-fledged infestation on their hands. Therefore, when it comes to moths, the sighting of even a few of them should be taken seriously. At The Exterminators, we understand the behavior of moths well, which in turn allows us to create the right strategies to apply successful moth control and extermination. We serve the Greater Toronto Area and its surroundings.

TYPES OF MOTHS
Although there are several thousand species of moths all over the world, only a few cause trouble on the home front. Some of the common species that harass households and businesses include the Buck Moths, the Cabbage Looper, Coneworms, Casemaking Clothes Moths, Gypsy Moths, Pantry Moths, Webbing Clothes Moths, Fall Web Worms, Almond Moths, Indian Meal Moths, Angoumois Grain Moths and Mediterranean Flour Moths. Amongst these, the Indian Meal Moths, the Pantry Moths and the Mediterranean Flour Moths are the most common ones.
INDIAN MEAL MOTH
The Indian Meal Moth, also known as the Pantry Moth, is one of the most common pests found in households and while moths are usually associated with fabric damage, these species of moths feed primarily on food and little else. Whether it is a home or a business, any food source will attract these moths, and probably the only other thing that can distract them from food is a bright light on a dark night!
While the Indian Meal Moth does come in contact with your food, the chances of contracting diseases are quite less, since these moths are not known to land on unhygienic surfaces that may contain disease-spreading germs. In spite of this, it is recommended that you do away with any food that may be infested with these moths.
Their choice of food is wide, ranging from soups and bread to dried fruits and chocolates. Measuring about 9-10 millimeters with the size of the wings going up to around 15-16 millimeters in the adult stage, the larvae and pupae of these moths are usually found on the corners of walls and ceilings.
mEDITERRANEAN FLOUR MOTHS
The Mediterranean Flour Moth is also known as the Indian Flour Moth or the Mill Moth and is pale gray in color with grayish-white wings. The adult moth in this species measures around 12 millimeters in length, with the wing span reaching 16-20 millimeters.
In this species, the adult moths are fairly conspicuous in terms of damage or intrusion as they simply do not feed. However, the caterpillars of these moths make up for what the adults don’t do! Feeding on flour – hence the name – cereal, dry grains and even baked goods, these caterpillars are quite a nuisance in a kitchen or in businesses that store or manufacture these food items. These caterpillars are also known to feed on mushrooms, dried fruits or even rotting wood in the absence of their favorite food sources.
More often than not, moths go unnoticed until they begin causing some serious damage. While moths flying about are a surefire sign of their continued presence in your household, it is only upon the discovery of the destruction they cause that most home or business owners become aware of their presence. Moths that feed on fabric are the worst kind, as they render even the costliest of clothing unusable.
Upon closer inspection, you may also find the cocoons, webbing or even the droppings of moths. However, in most cases, due to the concealed nature of their existence as well as their nocturnal habits, moths often go unnoticed until they reach a sizeable population.
MOTH CONTROL SOLUTIONS
At The Exterminators, we understand well that although moths do not cause any direct harm to humans, unless we are talking Vampire Bats, they do cause a nuisance and when allowed, damage to clothing and upholstery as well. Of course, food infestations are a common nuisance too. Therefore, even the presence of a few moths should be taken seriously. We offer moth control services for Toronto households as well as business and our insured services come with 6-month warranty.
