Where Do Cockroaches Lay Their Eggs?

Cockroaches are easy to spot when they leave their hiding places. You may have seen one scurry away when you turned the lights on one night. Their brown, beetle-like bodies are easy to identify and terrifying to look at. But what about their eggs? What do cockroach eggs look like? Finding a cockroach egg in your home is just as worrisome as finding an adult, so it’s good to know what they look like.

Cockroach eggs are called ootheca. Ootheca are little brown sacs that contain up to 50 juvenile cockroaches. The most likely ootheca you will find is the German cockroach’s, which measures between 6 to 9mm in length and has a somewhat rectangular shape. The ootheca is soft when it is first laid, then hardens over time to function as a strong protective casing. Other species’ eggs vary in size and colour. The brown-banded cockroach’s ootheca is much smaller, while the American and Oriental cockroach’s ootheca are thicker and darker. It takes about 30 days for the ootheca to hatch. A female cockroach will lay approximately 4 to 6 ootheca in her lifetime, producing as many as 300 offspring.

Interestingly, German cockroaches do not lay their eggs in hiding spots. They usually carry their eggs with them until they hatch. You can find their emptied ootheca anywhere near their living space: on countertops, in cabinets, or anywhere surrounding kitchen appliances. Other species of cockroaches hide their eggs to keep them safe from harm. These can be found in cracks and crevices, in pipes, and within piles of waste. Anywhere the cockroaches like to hide out of sight. If you think there are cockroaches living in your home or place of work, give Cockroach Control Toronto a call.
