Do I Have Cockroaches In My House – Top 3 Signs of a Cockroach Problem

Cockroaches are a frustrating and dangerous infestation that can bring with it all kinds of illness and bacteria. There are three common species of cockroach in Southern Ontario. The American cockroach is the biggest in physical size of the common North American Cockroaches, as well as being the only native cockroach that can compete with the introduced German and Oriental Cockroaches which are smaller but far more tenacious and efficient. The American cockroach is the only member of this group that has not lost its wings. Oriental cockroaches, for example, have only vestigial wings that do not work. The American cockroach can use them to fly very short distances. They are not as focused on homes as they are on apartment buildings and commercial buildings with large food stores. They need more food than the average cockroach so a house may not have enough for them. You need to know how to prevent cockroaches in kitchen cabinets to avoid a full-blown infestation. The German cockroach is very small at half an inch on average. They are tan or brown and look like a small rounded shield of carapace segments. They are much better at hiding and are much harder to find as they hide in very tight spaces.

If you have cockroaches you may not be able to find them but you can find signs of them. Cockroaches eat an unreliable amount of food. They gorge themselves daily and the result is a large amount of poop, much more than would be expected from another insect. The good thing is they cannot really control their bowels and simply poop as they walk. This means finding cockroach poop is finding where they are coming from and where they are going to. They look like coffee grounds or ground black pepper and will be all over the place in the kitchen so you should not have to look far if it is a large infestation.

Another way to find them is with their egg sacks. They are called Oothecae which are tiny leathery cases that hold the eggs until the tiny cockroaches hatch. Cockroaches do not have any stages of proper transformation. They grow in size and their bodies change slightly but not like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. This is why many people will complain about seeing tiny cockroaches swarming into the microwave vent or under the kitchen sink. They are not tiny cockroaches, they are baby cockroaches. The babies are intelligent enough that they do not need parental guidance and will simply find food and safety on their own. Finding tiny cockroaches is a good sign you have bigger ones in the walls. You can also tell if your home has a musty odour, one that smells pungent and oily. If you notice all these things you have a cockroach infestation and need to contact The Exterminators Inc.
