Bed bugs, despite what the name may imply, hide in many places besides beds. You can find them in clothing, inside books, in cracks in the walls and ceilings, inside dressers and night stands and many other locations. Bed bugs prefer to live with humans inside houses in Canada if they can find their way in. Their flat bodies and small size almost guarantee that they can gain access to the house and you need to call a bed bug exterminator. It is however not uncommon to find bed bugs outdoors.

Bed Bugs Outdoors

Although faced with a harsh environment, bed bugs are highly adaptable and very capable of surviving outdoors.

A common myth is that winter is sure to kill any bed bugs nesting outdoors. Although these critters can be killed by freezing, the temperature needs to be constant below zero for an extended period of time. Bed bugs lower their metabolism to allow them to stay alive in below freezing temperature for up to 4 days. The variations in temperature, humidity and sunlight even in the harshest of winters are unlikely to kill bed bugs. In any case, they can find a relatively warm hiding place outdoors owing to their tiny size.

Bed bugs prefer human blood but will feed on any blood as long as it is warm. There is plenty of food available outdoors in form of rats, mice, raccoons, pets and other creatures. The bug’s small size allows them to climb undetected on their prey. A bed bug can also last anywhere from five months to a year without feeding in the event that food is scarce.

Bed bugs can survive outdoors but not nearly as well as in houses. They have natural predators such as spiders which are in plenty outside.

Call an Exterminator to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

It is only a matter of time until bed bugs find their way into the house if they are living anywhere in the vicinity. An adult bed bug is about the size of an apple seed and can easily find an entry point to the house. The critters are also great hitchhikers and will ride on your clothes or pets if they get the chance.

Bed bugs are immune to most over-the-counter insecticides which is why DIY extermination has such a high failure rate.  Strict chemical and pesticide regulations mean that only professionals have access to potent insecticides that work on bed bugs.

Hire a licensed exterminator in Canada to get rid of your bed bug problem quickly, safely and permanently. Ask for a warranty of at least six months to ensure that the job was successful.
