Ants are a continuous problem both inside the home, and outside in the garden. While insecticides are normally used to eliminate ants, this is not a preferred method for many people, not only for their children and pets, but also for themselves, and any food they might be growing in their garden as well. Following are some natural ways to get rid of ants in your garden which in turn, will eliminate them from your home as well. Prevent existing ants from entering your house.
There are a few things that you can do in your garden to stop ants from getting into your house, such as:
– Keeping mulches and plants at least one foot away from the foundation, windows, walls, and roof, because these plants and debris will form a perfect bridge for ants to gain entry into your home
– Seeing that all cracks and holes in the walls for electrical work and pipes are properly sealed Reduce the presence of ants in your garden significantly by simply planting herbs and flowers. Certain herbs and flowers are natural repellants for ants, so by simply planting them in your garden, the likelihood of ants coming into your house will be drastically reduced as well.
Plant herbs such as tansy, pennyroyal, sage, mint, and basil near windows and doors, and their pungent smell will reduce the numbers of ants in your garden, and stop them from entering your home as well. Marigold flowers are one of the best known ant repellents in the garden. Plant them around the border of your garden, as well as around trees that you want to protect against ants which might nest in them. Feed the ants in your garden with corn meal
Ants enjoy eating cornmeal for its sweet taste, but are unable to digest it. By sprinkling cornmeal around your garden, you can starve the ants out instead of simply deterring them. The ant activity in your garden will increase for a few days, but will decrease drastically after that. Sprinkle more cornmeal around your garden when it has rained, or when more ants appear in your garden.
