How to Protect Yourself From Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is  transmitted by tick bites and caused by Borrelia bacteria and can bring a variety of awful and potentially dangerous symptoms with it. To keep yourself safe, there are a number of precautions you can take to make sure you don’t end up in contact with it and one of them is to call your local pest control company to perform tick control.

If you’re an outdoorsman who enjoys hiking or jogging in wooded areas or trails, avoid walking through long grass, and always wear footwear that covers your ankles to reduce the risk of tick bites. If possible, opt to wear thick pants instead of skirts or shorts. Even long skirts are often ineffective in keeping ticks away in areas where they thrive.

Frequently check your local news or other postings for warnings about “Tick Season,” or reported tick cases in the neighborhood. If you’re outdoors and you spot wild animals like birds or mice, avoid touching them. Many people enjoy feeding wild animals by hand, and this is not a good idea. To reduce the risk of infection, always keep a safe distance from any wild or stray animals in your area. Avoid small animals especially. They’re known carriers of ticks and fleas. Always bathe your own household pets regularly to reduce the risk of infection, and get them vaccinated at your local veterinary clinic.

Always remember to check your children, pets and yourself for the appearance of ticks or tick bites after being outside. If you spot a tick, remove it with tweezers and make a doctor’s appointment if possible to be certain you haven’t encountered Lyme disease. Use insect repellent when you’re outside to keep unwanted ticks and other parasites like fleas away from yourself and family.

During Tick Season, avoid humid, moist grassy areas and wooded places like forests and patches of thick trees. Stay away from riverbanks and swamps in shaded places, and if you’re on a trail, even in urban environments, always stay directly on the plotted path and don’t venture off into the trees. To get your pets to follow suit, keep them on a short leash when visiting wooded areas. Instruct your children on how to spot ticks on their legs and arms, and make sure to keep a close eye on them while they’re playing outside to keep them from going into tick-infested areas. If you suspect that ticks have entered your home, call the Exterminators: 647-496-2211. It’s unlikely that they’ll survive in an indoor environment, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
