WASP INFESTATION SOLUTIONS

Tampering with an active wasp nest can be very dangerous. When feel threatened wasps will swarm and attack. Wasps build their nests in trees, under roofs of buildings and other shady and secure places. These nests can hold anything between hundred to a thousand wasps. It is usually towards the end of the summer season that the wasp nest and colony will be its biggest in size and number. The larger the nest, the more difficult it is to remove it. It is; hence, better to remove a wasp nest as soon as you notice it. There are various species of wasps, and it is best to understand the species that has infested your property before attempting any extermination procedures.

A female wasp tends to produce eggs that are unfertilized and these eggs eventually develop into male wasps. The male wasps then breed with other female wasps who will go on to become queens of their respective colonies. Every colony of wasps will have one queen and the worker wasps will be in charge of taking care of the larvae produced by this queen. Wasps feed various food sources such as vegetables, fruits and insect larvae in order to excrete a paper-like material that is used for building the wasp nest. This material later on hardens and becomes strong enough to hold hundreds of wasps in it. The nest of a wasp is quite similar to that of bees. It comprises of tiny sections or compartments that hold the larvae, until they grow and become wasps.

Removing a wasp nest is not an easy task and it is best to contact professional wasp removal agents to help you with this task. If you try to remove a wasp nest on your own, without the required equipment or gear, you are likely to get stung by the wasps.

WASP NEST PROBLEMS

Wasps build nests on walls and ceilings, inside walls, inside siding and soffits and can damage structures. While they are mainly feared for their sting, wasps can also create an unpleasant sight with their nests. If you have wasp nests in or around your office buildings, it doesn’t create a very positive impression on customers and clients. You will also need to be wary of the potential employee injury claims made by employees, due to being stung or injured at work. The sight of a wasp nest is enough to arouse anxiety among humans and this poses as a distraction to employees at work. Wasps build their nests close to food sources. In order to avoid a wasp infestation, you need to ensure that trash cans and other such food sources are kept tightly sealed or covered.

Fortunately, while wasp infestations may be difficult to get rid of, but is definitely not impossible. So leave it to the professionals to eradicate wasps from your property and keep your home and office safe. HEALTH RISKS

Wasps are attracted to sweet smells and will build usually their nests on tree branches or inside rotting wood, in gardens, or near open trash bins. They even tend to surround or attack humans who wear strong perfumes. Wasps can sting more than once. Their stings cause reddening of skin and rashes. If you are allergic to wasp stings, you could also develop some serious temporary or permanent health problems. The more severe allergic reactions to such wasp stings include dizziness, nausea, swelling and a constant itch. If you notice any adverse skin reactions to wasp stings, we would advise you to visit a doctor and get it looked at immediately. Insecticide treatments by licensed exterminators should not be a health concern. All wasp treatments are performed on the exterior of structures and are localized only to the area of the nest. A live nest with aggressive wasps and hornets should be more of a health concern than a pest management program.

STINGING INSECTS TYPES

These are the types of flying, stinging insects that belong to or are related to the wasp family of insects and can be found in and around the Hamilton area. While honey bees belong to this category The Exterminators Inc. does not treat honey bee nests and beehives. For assistance, you can check with the Ontario Beekeepers Association.

YELLOW JACKETS

The yellow jacket wasp measures 10 to 16 millimeters in length. Yellow jackets have many differences when compared to bees. The yellow jacket’s body is much thinner and has far less hairs. Their elongated wings approximately the same size as their body and fold laterally when the insect is at rest. A queen yellow jacket starts a fresh nest by constructing a small paper nest where she places the very first batch of eggs. After hatching, these eggs have been fed by the queen till they are ready to pupate and grow to mature yellow jackets. The fertilized females can survive the colder winter months by hibernating. The male yellowjackets and workers will die off.

BALD FACED HORNETS

The body of the bald-faced hornet has a black body and a white face. Bald-faced hornets are larger than most yellow jackets, with workers ranging from 15 to 20 mm or more. Bald-faced hornets are most active during the day and usually build their paper nests hanging from tree branches, overhangs and soffits. A colony begins in spring, when a queen lays a single egg inside each cell as she begins to build her nest. A bald-faced hornet nest can grow to be as large as a soccer ball in only under a few months. Males and workers die off in the winter while fertilized females l hibernate during the colder months.

PAPER WASPS

There are many species of paper wasps but they all share similar characteristics. Their bodies are slim and is dark in color with some yellow coloration. Their nests are made by combining organic material and saliva and resembles paper hence the name paper wasp nest. Their stings are also venomous and can be very painful.

MUD DAUBERS

Mud daubers are a type of wasps that create their nests using mud. They longer than paper wasps and usually their size ranges 1/2 to 1 inch long. Mud daubers are solitary. They start to get active during spring months when they begin building their nests. After finishing the mud nest, then start to catch spiders or insects that are put into every mud nest hole to feed their larvae.

CARPENTER BEES

Carpenter bees resemble bumble bees. Carpenter bees make their nests by digging tubular holes in wood surfaces. They make their nests in wood that is not treated and not covered by bark. They partner, feed on pollen and nectar, go back to their own gallery to overwinter and then emerge next spring. They do not eat wood but feed on plant pollen and nectar. While only females are capable of stinging they can display aggressiveness when they feel their nests in under threat.
